Past Simple

For actions completed at a specific time in the past.

"I watched a movie yesterday."

For habitual actions or states that were true in the past but are not anymore.

"He used to live in that house."

Past Continuous

For an ongoing action in the past, often interrupted by another event.

"They were having dinner when the phone rang."
